Bunions

Bunions

The medical name for a bunion is Hallux Abducto Valgus (HAV). It occurs when there is a deviation of the bones of the big toe and is usually identified by a bump on the inside of the first toe. Onset is gradual and may result in a red and painful joint.

Common causes of bunions include:

  • Tight and narrow footwear
  • Poor biomechanics
  • Genetics, e.g. bone shape
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

Unfortunately, the only way to completely fix bunions is by surgical means to realign the joint. However, your Podiatrist can implement a treatment plan to help reduce painful bunions and strengthen the intrinsic muscles of the feet, which is often lost overtime as bunions worsen. In some cases, orthotics may be prescribed to alter the biomechanics and to help alleviate foot pain.
